How are we getting to ´the other side of the world?´

Living here in Lanzarote, we have no choice but to head to mainland Spain, or some other European city, to have access to long haul flights. The volcanic island is the size of a pumice stone, and so a large ´International´airport here is not really practical. Dani´s desire to fly on Singapore Airlines new A380 double decker super plane meant that our journey would need to start and finish at London Heathrow. Although we do have budget airlines running from here to Gatwick, the idea of hauling luggage, laptops and camera equipment on a bus, train or underground sounded a bit too much, so we have booked flights with Iberia via Madrid. By doing this, at least we land into Heathrow and so are at the right airport.

We are having to stay over night as the flight times didn´t coincide, but at least we won´t be rushing and getting stressed out on the day of departure! Infact, our flight isn´t until 11pm, on the day of my birthday!, so we have time to watch the rugby in the pub at the airport :-D and then we will be off on the first leg, 13 hours to Singapore.  There is a quick two hour layover there, with a change of plane for our second leg, a further 10 hours down to our first port of call……Auckland..!
