Queenstown in one of the top ten places to visit for most tourists coming to the south island. Located on the shores of Lake Wakatipu it flanked by the mountain range known as ´The Remarkables´ reaching more than 2000m above sea level, it is a town renowned for its spine tingling adventure activities.
As we took the scenic route along the valley between high peaks, we first past AJ Hackett´s ´World Home of Bungy´, the place where the man himself started his bungy empire. This site is nestled into the rock face over the stunning Kawarau River where, those wishing to, can throw themselves off the bridge on a 43m jump over the rapid flowing river below. After taking a few pictures we headed off down to Queenstown.
The town is picture perfect and compact and really easy to negotiate of foot. After parking the car, we headed around the lake front, noting the number of sandbags still on show after the bad weather that occurred here a couple of weeks ago where, due to the huge amount of rain, the lake burst its banks and headed towards the town. This lakefront area is where you can take a Jet Boat ride, go parasailing or pick up a trip on an old steam liner, there are also many eateries and coffee shops where you can sit and watch the activities on the lake.
The town has lots of restaurants, over 100, and numerous shops, some of them outlets for selling adventure activities, bungy jumping, skydiving, jet boating, paragliding, helicopter rides, rafting…..to name just a few!
The place is supposed to be packed in the summer, but at this time of year it had a comfortable amount of people. We wandered around the quaint streets and did a bit of shopping before having a look around Queenstown Gardens, where for the first time ever, I saw the recreational activity of ´Frisbee Golf´being played!
Later in the afternoon we took the Skyline Gondola up to Bob´s Peak, 450m above the town which boasts a world class view! It is here that you can do some paragliding, which Dani and an instructor tried to persuade me into doing, but that one will take a bit of thinking about!
All in all, Queenstown is a really nice, pretty, lakeside town, but we only really felt that we needed to spend one day there. It the weather was hotter and if we had time to boost our adrenaline, then maybe we would have stayed longer, but the time we spent here was really nice as it was
- AJ Hackett’s first Bungee bridge
- Autumn colours
- Lake Wakatipu with it’s “Old Lady”
- Queenstown atmosphere
- Queentown gardens
- Lake impressions
- Queenstown and the Remarkables
