Trip overview

Oct 31 – Nov 12, 2026 on the ground — fly into Auckland, loop both islands in a motorhome, and fly home from Auckland. You land the evening of Oct 30 (~7:30 PM); RV pickup is Oct 31, so the road trip effectively starts that Saturday.

Route

Fly into Auckland (evening arrival Oct 30). Pick up the motorhome Oct 31 and head south through North Island nature — Rotorua, Tongariro, Wellington — then ferry to the South Island for Mt Cook, Wanaka, and Kaikoura before returning north to drop the RV at Auckland Airport Nov 12.

Transport

6-berth motorhome (quoted options in RV Rentals) — pick up & drop off Auckland Airport, 13 days. Interislander ferry Wellington ↔ Picton both ways for the Cook Strait crossings. Unlimited km on the Star RV quote; compare cards for full details.

Accommodation

Sleep aboard the motorhome — holiday parks, DOC camps, and the occasional splurge stop. Book popular parks ahead for late Oct / early Nov peak season.

Sample days on your route

  • Park / countryside day (Mt Cook, Wanaka holiday park) — NZ$40–50. Cook breakfast & dinner in the RV, pack lunches for hikes.
  • Town day (Rotorua, Kaikoura, Picton, Wanaka) — NZ$55–70. One meal out (fish & chips or casual dinner), self-cater the rest.
  • Long driving / ferry day — NZ$55–65. More takeaway or simple RV meals for convenience.

Hit the lower end (NZ$45–55/day)

  • Shop at Pak'nSave in bigger towns — Rotorua, Christchurch area, Wanaka
  • Cook one-pot or BBQ meals at holiday parks (shared kitchens & BBQs)
  • Self-cater breakfast + lunch most days; eat out 3–5 times total (Kaikoura fish & chips, casual Wanaka or Picton dinner)
  • Buy in bulk — pasta, stir-fries, sausages + veg, rice bowls
  • Limit alcohol, fancy coffee, and packaged snacks

Quick NZ price benchmarks (2026)

Groceries (self-catering)

Milk, bread, eggs, pasta, rice, chicken, vegetables — very doable for NZ$10–15/person/day when cooking for 4.

Cheaper eating out

Fish & chips / takeaway NZ$12–20 · casual café or pub NZ$18–28 · inexpensive restaurant dinner NZ$25–35.

Higher end (NZ$65+/day): more eating out or touristy spots like Queenstown outskirts. Lower end (under NZ$50/day): disciplined self-catering + Pak'nSave runs. Remote areas cost slightly more than bigger centres.

Booking tips

  • Book powered sites early — especially Glentanner (Mt Cook), Wanaka, and Rotorua
  • Join Top 10 Club for ~10% off at their parks
  • Ask about weekly discounts or motorhome-specific rates
  • Powered grass sites are often cheaper than concrete pads
  • Freedom camping is limited in scenic areas — holiday parks are the reliable option

Mt Cook (Glentanner) is typically the priciest stop — main powered option near the national park. Kaikoura and some Picton outskirts offer excellent value.
